An update on genealogy

Recently I blogged about the free genealogy program called Family Tree Builder that you can download from MyHeritage.com and how I had gotten involved with it because I wanted to see how the program worked and how easy or hard it was to enter information in it. Now I guess I should acknowledge that I am finding it hard to put aside.

Remember Y2K?

The fear that on January 1, 2000, computers all over the world would stop working, because of the lack of programming foresight to allow for a change of the century in all the code written up to that point, was referred to as «the Y2K problem.» A disaster movie made a brief splash but as one reviewer said the movie really sucked and wasted a few minutes of our time and then we moved on.

The Wells-Fargo wagon

I'm kind of like a kid at Christmas this morning. I'm awaiting the arrival of the FedEx truck, hence the reference to «The Wells-Fargo Wagon» From Meredith Wilson's «The Music Man,» with «somethin' special» for me.

Raju Vegesna announced the Alpha version of a new Web 2.0 application called Zoho Notebook on January 30, 2007, and demonstrated it this week at DEMO '07. It looks pretty amazing to me, and I'd love to get in on trying it out. Check out the 3-minute video below.

Family tree

A few days ago, I talked about Face Recognition that was available from this site. On that same date, I downloaded their free genealogy software, called Family Tree Builder (FTB). And in subsequent days I've gone through their 56-page tutorial, an optional but useful exercise that helped me understand the software and maybe avoid some decisions that might adversely affect my options further along. (I'm probably one of the few people in the world who bothers to read the documentation for a program, particularly if it is good as it is in this case, almost as soon as I pick it up. I know many others, most people in fact, who just jump in and turn to the documentation only when they hit a wall and don't know how to do something. But the difference in these two strategies is possibly the topic of a worthwhile discussion in another post, so I'll save any further observations about that for then.)

Site availability today

This morning both of my sites, this one and The Fun Addicts site, hosted at Dreamhost have been up and down intermittently. Obviously this blog is up right now. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to make this post and you wouldn't be able to read it. So if you attempt to view the site or make a comment here and you only get a blank page, please just check back later. I reported the outage to the support team at Dreamhost and they have since reported back to me that they couldn't find anything wrong. So who knows what the cause was, but now it seems to be back up and functioning again.

Tinkering again

As you can see, I've changed the theme (a.k.a. template) again. This time it was sort of out of necessity.

Rescue the perishing

The title of this post is from the lyrics of a hymn, but it describes how I spent almost all of yesterday and most of the evening before.
