Fix for extraneous tabs

There is a problem with browsers (such as Flock) based on the Firefox engine when you click an external link such as from an email. The effect is that although the link opens in the browser, it will open two tabs, each of which loads the same URL. This has been known for some time, and I had corrected it in my previous version of Flock and Firefox, but since installing the new version that same problem has returned.

Flock's photo browser

Flock's photo browser, originally uploaded by CaptQuirk.

This photo shows the so-called Photo Browser toolbar in the latest version of Flock. The drop down list, indicated by the red arrow, lists all your contacts on Flickr and once you click on one of them, that person's latest photos are displayed across the top. If you wish to load one of the photos into a browser window, you just click on the photo at the top.  You can see a larger version of this photo, if you prefer.

New RSS feed look

RSS feed display, originally uploaded by CaptQuirk.

This photo shows how an RSS feed looks in the latest version of Flock. Quite nice, actually, and very readable. Also I used the photo uploader in Flock to upload this photo to my Flickr site, another nice addition to this browser. You can see the photo in the original size here.

Freshly flocked

After spending much of yesterday afternoon playing a frustrating game of «are-we-there-yet?» with Daryl Houston about the arrival of the new version of Flock and waking up this morning only to find that the new version wasn't where it was supposed to be, I finally logged into the flock irc channel and asked for directions.  (And you all know how hard it is for a man to bring himself to ask for directions.)  The friendly folks there at 5:30 in the morning pointed me to the Flock Wiki news page, where all was revealed. I followed the yellow brick road (aka the link) from there to the page to download the Windows version 0.5.9 and then did as instructed, once I had it installed, and clicked on Help / Check for Updates, and magically 0.5.9 became 0.5.10.  So although we are still not there yet, since «there» is version 0.6.0, we are getting close enough to see it just over the horizon, and I am pleased to report that I am freshly flocked.

Today is the day when the latest version of Flock is supposed to be released.  So far there is no news about its availability.  Come on, guys. I'm waiting.

a la carte

I'm a queer duck in more ways than one, as I'm sure many would agree. One of the ways in which I differ from most people is that I really enjoy exploring new software, finding out what it can do, and learning how it will permit me to tweak it to my own personal preferences. That explains in some measure why I am so fond of my favorite text editor, TSE Pro, why I use The Bat!, why I like Firefox and Flock, and why, most recently, I have fallen in love with xplorer2, a Windows shell replacement for Windows Explorer. They all give me exquisite control over how they function, and that to me is a joyful experience.

Snow at last

First snowfall of Winter, originally uploaded by CaptQuirk.

Last night we finally got some snow here in Knoxville and though it wasn't much, I couldn't resist capturing it «for posterity.» This picture, taken at about 7:15 a.m. with ambient light, is from in front of my house facing east toward the sunrise. As you can see, this is the kind of snowfall that looks pretty but doesn't interfere with travel, which is one of my prerequisites for a «good» snowfall.

Tarzan's Tripes Forever

Thanks to my friend, Paul Moor, for passing along this link to a delightful site called «Tarzan's Tripes Forever and Other Feghoots,» an assemblage of Shaggy Dog stories and other humor, maintained since 1995 by the father and son team of Alan and Brian Combs. This quote is from their 1995 introduction to the site:
